Doorstep Portraits
A series of images taken during the Covid Pandemic of 2020.
Doorstep Portraits 2020
Covid for me brought some of the biggest changes of my life. I suppose it did this for many people but as a photographer the world around me was closing down. I couldn’t go out and photograph anymore. There was nothing to photograph, no events no commercial business portraits, no weddings, no parties, no property to be photographed.
I had always photographed people, but now I couldn’t photograph anyone.
My connections with the outside world were diminishing and I remember the feeling of everybody being so afraid to have an encounter with another person. People would cross over the road rather than stop to say “Hello”, so I thought one way of being able to connect with people would be, to put a notice through the letterboxes of those around me and say if anybody wanted to be photographed on their doorstep, contact me and I will come take a photograph, upload it and it could be digitally downloaded by the sitter.
I had a great response and was able to connect with many people on the doorsteps during the pandemic. These are a few of the images that were taken.
I arranged to meet people at a particular time, rang the door bell then waited at the gate, it was interesting to hear people talk about how they were feeling and what the future would bring. By the end of that first lockdown, Id lost a lot of things and my life just wasn’t going to be the same ever again…..buts that’s another story.
