Gemma & Mike, Malmaison Wedding Liverpool

Its not everyday that I post a wedding where I feel a mixture of so much sadness and happiness, this is one of the greatest celebrations of love I have had the pleasure of witnessing.
Mike sadly passed away on the 6th of February but I can honestly say meeting Mike was such a great honour I would therefore like to use this post to raise awareness.

Gemma & Mike were married last April at Malmaison in Liverpool. It was such a beautiful and very emotional day because Gem and Mike are known as “Butterfly Children” I had never come across this condition before and I was stunned at how Gem and Mike wanted to make such a difference to other people who suffer with the same condition. The condition is Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) a potentially fatal skin blistering condition that causes constant pain due to unstoppable internal and external blistering and lifelong disability.

Gemma’s EB also causes Muscular Dystrophy, a weakness in the skeletal muscles, difficulty speaking, a tracheotomy, wounds which have to be dressed daily and an ocular surface disease. She also has a secondary blistering condition called Bullous Pemphigoid, which has to be controlled with high doses of steroids. Every day situations we take for granted in our every day life become an enormous challenge for EB sufferers.

Gem and Mike met at an EB clinic.
They came to me in the May of 2017 and I felt that it was such an honour to be part of their special day.

Mike became a Trustee for DEBRA in 2013,  (the national charity that supports individuals and families affected by Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB))  he became Vice Chair of the Board in 2015 and became DEBRA UK’s Chair of Trustees in May 2018. He was the first person living with EB to become President of DEBRA International, and a true pioneer for the community.
During his time in DEBRA’s leadership, Mike was a driving force for change and a tireless and determined advocate for the EB Community. As Chairman, he created a real transformation in DEBRA’s work – he helped shape DEBRA’s priorities whilst never losing sight of the charity’s vision and direction. He inspired many people with and without EB to take a more active part in DEBRA’s work. He once said, “EB is always there to keep me focused on making decisions that will bring the most benefit to people living with EB worldwide: you never lose sight of why you’re doing the job.” Mike was a true inspiration and a real hero in the fight against EB.

If anyone would like to more information or to support this charity please have a look at DEBRA.ORG.UK

This first dance image to me, is one of the most beautiful images I have ever taken because I know that both Mike and Gem would have been in so much pain and discomfort, yet there is such a look of complete and utter love between them.
I know that Gemma will have such precious memories of her wedding day and anyone that was privileged to have been a guest that day would have taken some very special and beautiful memories away with them too.

Im so lucky to have met Mike Jeaga I have never met someone with such strength and determination in the face of such adversity. Im so sure he would have touched many lives and will be imprinted on our hearts forever.
Our love, thoughts and prayers are with Gemma and both her families.

Sam xx

Heloise & Flynn, Bombed Out Church Wedding Liverpool

Heloise and Flynn’s wedding took place in the beautiful St Lukes Church affectionately known as the Bombed out church in Liverpool.
The iconic building was first constructed in the 1800s designed by John Foster, senior and John Foster, junior. It is a notable example of what is known as the Georgian Perpendicular Gothic Style. It features the first metal bell frame in the world, but was destroyed  in the spring of 1941 after the German Luftwaffe carried out a series of devastating raids on Liverpool

From 2007 till 2014, Urban Strawberry Lunch organised the day-to-day maintenance of St Lukes and coordinated a diverse calendar of regular exhibitions and events inside the grounds. In addition to this, they arranged showings of films, and many dance, poetry, and drama performances. Since 2014 to present day, Ambrose Reynolds (father of Heloise), former Artistic Director for Urban Strawberry Lunch, joined other members of the community to create a new organisation, ‘Bombed Out Church’; named after the building’s colloquial name. They have since continued the work started by USL, maintaining the church as a creative hub for the community.

In my days of photographing for the Liverpool Philharmonic I was involved with photographing a project with Urban Strawberry Lunch, little did I know that so many years later I would have the honour of photographing Ambrose’s daughter’s wedding at the Bombed out Church.
It was Heloise and her lovely mum Jilly who came to see me and booked me for the wedding. I felt so excited and privileged that they had chosen me and it was lovely to have a link to the family from my past days of photographing for the Liverpool Philharmonic.

It was a beautiful day full of emotion. I can’t tell you how stunning Heloise looked in her beautiful gown. Everything about the day was just magical and we loved photographing every minute of it.

Nikki & Richard, Inglewood Manor Wedding

Nikki & Richard’s Inglewood Manor Wedding, took place in Spring this year at the beautiful venue, Inglewood Manor in the magnificent Cheshire countryside.
This delightful Grade 2 listed building retains all the charm and warmth of a lavish Edwardian family home, remaining almost unaltered since it was built in 1915.

Nikki had asked us to arrive on the tail end of her getting ready and it was lovely as we were able to get some lovely shots of her and her children before the ceremony.
Nikki and all the girls looked stunning, and the boys all did a pretty good job of looking suitably dapper too!
The girls wore beautiful Empire line pale sage green dresses and the guys with matching ties but classic navy suits. Nikki looked beautiful in a lace and tulle dress from La Sposa, boutique brides of crosby.
The flowers were gorgeous from Wow flowers in Wallasey.

The setting of Inglewood Manor was just perfect, although the rain had stopped us from going on to the lawns, we were still able to shoot around the house and on the terraces.
There was a wonderful atmosphere for the whole day, full of love and laughter, the party got of to a great start with singer Paul Hand and everyone danced the night away.

we wish Nikki & Rich a blissfully happy marriage!

Sarah & Alec Hard Days Night Hotel Wedding Took place in the ‘Fab Four’ star Liverpool hotel. Hard Days Night Hotel is the world’s only Beatles inspired hotel, combining the highest quality facilities in a truly unique environment. Located at the heart of Liverpool’s ‘Beatles Quarter’ offering a luxurious wedding venue sitting adjacent to the world famous Cavern Club where the Beatles rose to fame. Housed in the magnificent Grade II listed Central Buildings, dating back to 1884, the beautifully restored hotel is steeped in history. What a wonderful place for a wedding a must for any Beatle fan!

I  started the day with Sarah  and the girls whilst they got ready at Hard Days Night Hotel.  Sarah looked stunning in her beautiful knee length lace gown from Lace & Co Wakefield and her bridesmaids were lovely in dark purple dresses. Neil met Alec and the boys  at the venue and they all looked fantastic in their suits. Especially Alec in a touch of velvet paisley.
Sarah’s  bouquet was an exquisite vintage creation with beautiful silk roses and broches.

It was a very beautiful ceremony followed by a wonderful reception, The attention to detail was just lovely as the room was full of stunning colourful gerbera floral arrangements.
Sarah & Alec’s Hard Days Night Hotel wedding, was a perfect day, the rain stopped and we were able to get out to Matthew Street to take a few shots before going back indoors. I love the red walled bar area, it made for some great shots of the Alec and the boys and Sarah and the girls. Its a wonderful hotel with amazing photo opportunities.

The party got into full swing with the fabulous band “The Essential 60’s” and everyone danced the night away into the twilight hours.
Neil and I wish Sarah & Alec a very happy Wedded life together!

Genevieve and Jonathan’s West Tower Wedding

West Tower makes one of the most perfect settings for a wedding with its elegance and charm in the beautiful countryside of Lancashire.  Genevieve and Jonathans wedding took in the month of January.  Its a lovely intimate setting for a winter wedding with tasteful décor and atmospheric lighting from beautiful chandeliers. West Towers’s team are just so lovely, with a very warm welcome and nothing is too much trouble.

I had gone to Genevieve’s house in the morning, which was a lovely hive of activity. All the girls were getting ready together and there was a lovely atmosphere brimming with excitement. Genevieve looked stunning in her very elegant fishtail lace gown and
the bridesmaids were absolutely lovely in mink dresses. The flowers for the bouquets were a mix of beautiful roses in pinks and ivory and they looked stunning and toned in perfectly to the bridesmaids dresses.
Neil had been photographing  Jonathan and the boys and they all looked very dapper indeed with their very stylish navy suits.

The setting at West Tower was beautiful. it stayed dry for us so we were able to get outside for some groups and a few shots before going back in to enjoy drinks and listen to the dulcet tones of the saxophone  before the wedding breakfast.

The evening got into full swing with a fantastic band and everyone had a fantastic time dancing the night away.

A very beautiful wedding, with a very beautiful couple!

Liverpool Athenaeum Wedding

The Liverpool Athenaeum wedding of Helen and Ray took place  on the 17th December 2016. It was a full on year last with all sorts of exciting things happening, now Im finally catching up on my blog slowly!

The Athenaeum in Liverpool, is one of the most beautiful and sought after wedding venues in Liverpool City center. Its sophisticated surroundings and architecture, notable history and beautiful room settings make for a breathtakingly elegant backdrop to celebrate your special day.
Its a photographers dream as there are so many lovely spaces to photograph in. The key background colours are green, red and gold, with a fabulous oval staircase connecting the floors. The rooms are spacious with huge windows allowing for beautiful natural light. There is a wonderful Library which makes a fantastic backdrop for group photographs. For creativity and stunning photographic potential I highly recommend this Venue.
School Lane and the Bluecoat building is just outside  giving you a wonderful outdoor opportunities too.  I absolutely love this building and the photographic potential that this offers.

Helen and ray wanted a very natural and relaxed feel to their wedding photography. We started the day at Helen’s parents house where she and the girls got dressed.  Helen looked stunning and  wore a beautiful lace gown and the girls all had deep red dresses which tied in beautifully to the gorgeous bouquet of red roses, pine cones and berries, perfect for a winter wedding.

Ray and the guys were dressed in blue and grey suits with deep red satin ties to complement the flowers and bridesmaid dresses.

It was a gorgeous day with a very relaxed pace, we were able to take Helen and Ray across to the Bluecoat to get some shots in the courtyard before heading back to the Athenaeum for their wedding breakfast.

The party got off to a great start and everyone had a wonderful day!

Kirsty and Ben’s 30 James Street Wedding

Kirsty and Ben were married at the wonderful 30 James Street on the 26th November 2016. Happy first anniversary !!

I thought I would share their wedding with you to show you the lighting conditions and how the rooms look at this time of year.  Kirsty and Ben were both fun loving wonderful people with an eye for opulence. This stunning historical setting in Liverpool 30 James Street combines decadence and style, with views over the River Mersey.

Albion House was the former HQ of the White Star Shipping line. This iconic building with is decorative architecture and brickwork  certainly has the wow factor as you enter the building. I remember on the day, the girls had hair and make up done at Peaches and Cream salon and then headed over tho the hotel to get dressed. Neil had gone over to see Ben and his brother, who looked very dapper in their grey suits. The flowers were an exquisite mix of white roses and feathers. They complemented the soft greys of the boys suits beautifully.

The girls, flower-girls and pages all got ready together and there was an lovely feeling of excitement in the air, I had met the two page boys the year before at another wedding so it was lovely to see them in this role once again. Kirsty looked stunning in her fishtail lace gown.  The highlight of my day had to be the pillow fight on the bed!

The White Star Grand Hall  is spacious and light, allowing for lots of naturally light photographs of the ceremony and  speeches, its one of the largest wedding suites in Liverpool with lovely high ceilings , Upstairs the balcony can be used creatively to get some stunning sunset shots. With the Liver buildings and Pier head across the road, it has the backdrop for some really creative photography.  We were blessed with dry weather so we took a walk over to pier head for some shots and it also gave the couple some time to be together.
It was a fantastic day and everyone had a wonderful time dancing the night away.

Neil and I wish Kirsty & Ben a very happy wedding anniversary!!!

Rob & Cat’s Meols Hall Wedding

Rob & Cat’s Meols Hall Wedding took place at the beautiful venue of Meols Hall, Churchtown,  Southport.  It was a dry sunny November day and the last of the  autumn colours were just filtering through the trees with a touch of gold here and there.  Neil and I started the bridal preparation images at the Vincent Hotel in  Southport where the bridal party were getting ready.
Cat’s bouquet was a gorgeous mix of deep red roses, calla lilies, berries  and eucalyptus.  Her gown was stunning and Cat looked so beautiful.

Rob and his party had also been getting ready at the hotel. They all looked very handsome in their grey suits and they met us in the reception area with family to get a few photos before traveling on to Meols Hall.

There was a beautiful ceremony at the Tithebarn followed by a lovely reception in the courtyard . Luckily with the weather staying dry we were able to take all the guests out to be photographed outside and afterwards we took Rob & Cat out under the trees in the lovely autumn evening. Autumn is my favourite time of year with fantastic colours everywhere and nature settling down to sleep for the winter ahead. Its just such a magical time of year.

Meols Hall is Southport’s historical manor house dating back to the early 12th Century. Set in one hundred acres of private parkland close to the picturesque village of Churchtown, this is one of the oldest settlements on the Lancashire coast. It makes a stunning setting for weddings as the grounds are beautiful and make a splendid backdrop for photographs. I have photographed a few weddings here now and Im very fond of this venue for the opportunities it gives the photographer.

The party got into full swing and a wonderful time was had by all!

Love Sam & Neil xx

Sleeklens Review

I was contacted by Jane Grates of Sleeklens a few months ago to review their “strike a pose portrait” presets. Presets are like filters in mobile phone apps  but they allow photographers much more control over the images as you can either paint various parts of an image or vary the amount of preset applied to give you a more subtle look.
I tend to initially edit in Lightroom and then I move into Photoshop for more refinement. Its funny when I think back to being in my darkroom with bits of tissue paper and lace tied onto the lens of my enlarger and a variety of different toning chemicals to produce interesting effects when printing, now all the magic happens at the touch of a button and there are numerous presets to try.

Sleeklens are a company that I hadn’t used before, so I thought why not give it a go and test them out. They do presets for Lightroom and photoshop workflows,  I happily obliged and ventured into the Lightroom presets offered by Sleeklens.

As photographers of today our workflow has increased in volume so much, gone are the days of shooting rolls of film.
We would hand them over to a lab and then forget about them until you had to collect them. Then we would carefully mount them into albums or frames for our clients.

Now Photoshop has replaced the darkroom or lab and you can spend hours transforming images sitting at your computer instead of being in the dark!,  and the whole album process when designing pages can be done sitting at our screens.

The great thing about presets is that it saves us valuable time, instead of spending hours of screen time, creating a particular look it can all be achieved in the click of a button. Thats what I like about presets, the art is to use them sparingly and creatively so you don’t get an over processed look, or depending on what your doing to you desire to go for certain looks. Whatever you like to do it does save lots of time.

Starting with a straight from camera shot of one of my brides, I applied 6 different presets, each one creates a very different look and mood.
On some of the images you can see that the hightlights are blown, you would just have to pull back the highlights in lightroom to remove this.
